Unknown Beasts has a simple three step gameplay loop. First the Beast sets the scene. Secondly investigators choose what kind of move or action they want to do and describe this and their desired outcomes. Thirdly there is dice roll that is based on investigators relevant skill levels and other environmental factors. There is resolution of events which will lead to new information being discovered and the story moving forward. Two latter steps are repeated until the scene ends.
All actions in Unknown Beast are resolved with a dice roll. After investigators have chosen their action, desired outcome and relevant skill they roll the dice. The Beast will always roll a single die. Investigators will roll dice equal to the level they have in the relevant skill. If investigator doesn’t have any levels in the relevant skill they will use two dice and pick the lower result.
After this investigator compares each of their die individually against the result of the Beasts die. Each die that is equal or higher than the Beast is considered a success.

Whenever the scene ends the next player in order will become the Beast. Previous Beast hands the Beast character sheet to the new Beast. This means that their investigator will turn into a passive non-player character and the previous player’s investigator will again become an active participant. This allows each person to be the Beast on their own turn allowing them greater control over the story being told.
